The edge of Teshekpuk Lake in Alaska's National Petroleum Reserve (NPR-A) seem barren, but the wetlands here teem with bird life in summer. "It is more important, there are more birds, of higher density, in the NPR-A than in the Arctic Refuge," says scientist Rebecca McGuire of the Wilderness Conservation Society.
